In South Carolina, a man used his second amendment right to fire warnings shots after noticing two crooks trying to steal his vehicle. Because the South Carolina homeowner wanted to scare the men away, he fired two shots to let them know he meant business and hopefully scare them away from his vehicle. However, the warning shots did not scare away the suspects as intended – instead, the suspects turned their pent-up rage on the South Carolina man allegedly killing him in the process.
Now two suspects, 20-year-old Brandon Meyers and 17-year-old Bobby Cason have been charged with murder and attempted grand larceny. The incident occurred outside the victim’s house and careened out of control when the homeowner approached the suspects with his firearm, intent on using the gun to scare away the robbers.
Police claim that the two suspects had obtained the keys to the victim’s car from a previous break-in. Because the homeowner wanted to scare the people away from his property, he fired two warning shots into the air. However, this did not work as he had intended.
Once the warning shots were fired, one of the suspects allegedly returned fire, striking the South Carolina victim with a bullet. After one of the suspects allegedly shot the homeowner, both Meyers and Cason reportedly ran away from the scene of the crime.
“Responding officers heard gunfire as they approached the location and saw the suspect vehicle roll backward into a yard then flee the scene,” Spencer Pryor with the North Charleston Police Department told WCSC.
Police have not revealed the identity of the gunshot victim. However, they did report those responding officers found the homeowner with the gunshot when they arrived at the property. He was declared dead upon the arrival of the first responders.
“The suspects fled the area, eluding police and eventually crashing into several cars in the Forest Hills 2 neighborhood before being captured,” Pryor said.
After the victim was shot and killed, the suspects fled in a vehicle. They crashed the car against several other vehicles during their escape from the scene and later fled. Police caught up with both suspects pretty quickly and managed to put them in handcuffs because of the violence they were thought to have caused.
“It’s terrifying,” said Brendan Everett, who lives in the neighborhood. “But as I said, it’s very quiet here … and it was just really frightening.”
“We were just sitting and watching TV. It’s Sunday night,” said one neighbor who did not want to be identified. “And we heard a whole bunch of noise outside.”
The two suspects have been charged with murder and attempted grand larceny in connection to this crime.
The homeowner was tragically killed as a result of this botched robbery. This event is another example of why homeowners need to be aware of their surroundings and take necessary precautions when owning firearms. It’s also a reminder that crime can happen anywhere – even in quiet neighborhoods like the one where this incident occurred.
