Matt Lauer, now 67, looks almost unrecognizable nearly a decade after being fired from the Today Show

In 2017, Matt Lauer was dismissed from his role at the NBC News morning program following credible allegations of sexual misconduct in the workplace. He at the time acknowledged that “some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterised, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed.”

Since then, Lauer has stepped away from national television and embraced a quieter personal life. He was recently photographed near his Long Island residence in the village of Sag Harbor, New York. In images posted by celebrity photographer Elder Ordonez on Instagram, he appeared bald, wearing a black‑and‑white patterned shirt, white skinny jeans and white sneakers. His appearance sparked widespread comment on social media about how much he has changed since his broadcasting days.

Lauer’s trajectory offers a cautionary tale about celebrity, accountability and reinvention. After decades in a high‑visibility role, his dismissal brought swift and foundational change. He has since changed both his public presence and his private priorities.

Whether that change represents penance, peace, or something in between cannot be definitively answered. However, factually speaking, he has largely withdrawn from the foreground, adopted a more casual personal style, and embraced a far less public‑facing existence.
