‘Memphis has good youth’: Woman praises stranger for jumping in to pay for her gas

Buying gas for our vehicles is an inevitable part of everyday life that none of us look forward to. But not for one Memphis woman who couldn’t believe what she was hearing when the young man in front of her offered to pay for her gas.

Olivia Jennings was standing in line at her local gas station waiting to pay when she began talking to two young men standing in front of her.

“I was standing in line and there were two young men in front of me who were laughing and cutting up and I started cutting up with them; we were having a good time,” she said.

“I was teasing him about all the orange juice they were buying.”

Their friendly banter led to one of the young men insisting on paying Olivia’s gas bill.

“I thought he was teasing, and I pulled out my credit card, and I said, ‘oh it’s ok, I got it.’ He said, ‘no, ma’am, I really want to buy your gas.’ I said, ok.”

The young man then handed over $20 to pay for Olivia’s gas. The surprised mom wanted to share her experience with others to let people know there are good youth in Memphis.

She took a picture with him and posted it to her Facebook page writing: “This young man just bought my gas. Tell me about Memphis young folks.”

Her post was liked and shared hundreds of times.

“It was absolutely great for everybody coming together saying ‘yes, you are right Memphis has good youth,’” Olivia said. “No matter what you say, we’ve got them. They are everywhere.”

Olivia shared how proud she was of the generous teen and how sweet it was to meet him.

Such a wonderful moment and the perfect one to share with others. I hope that young man, who was never tracked down, is treated with all the kindness he showed Olivia that day.

Please share.
