Avoid grabbing a tick with your fingers and pulling it off quickly. Squeezing, twisting, or using too much force can cause the head to break off and remain in the skin, or it may increase the chance of germs entering the bite area.
The safest method is to use fine-tipped tweezers or forceps. Position the tips as close to the skin as possible, right at the point where the tick is attached. Pull upward slowly and steadily, using gentle, even pressure. Do not twist, crush, or jerk the tick while removing it.
After removal, inspect the bite area carefully. If a small dark fragment is left behind, do not dig into the skin aggressively. In many cases, the body will naturally push it out as the skin heals, or a medical professional can remove it safely if needed.
Once the tick is removed, clean the area thoroughly. Wash your hands and the bite site with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based sanitizer. Proper cleaning helps reduce the risk of infection.
