Grandparents arrested in mysterious death of French toddler

For nearly two years, France has been haunted by the tragic loss of Émile Soleil, the bright-eyed toddler whose skull and teeth were discovered near a quiet Alpine village. In a shocking twist, his story is nearing its end as four family members were arrested on March 25 for “intentional homicide” and “concealing a corpse.”

In July 2023, when Émile Soleil disappeared, he was left in the care of his grandparents, who were vacationing at their summer home in Le Haut-Vernet, a remote village that’s nestled in the French Alps.

Described as a lively, curious child, the 2 1/2-year-old boy – whose parents were not there the day he disappeared – was last seen wandering alone on a street in the hamlet, which a French publication explains is 4,000 feet up in the French Alps.

And then – he was gone.

‘Search efforts’Can’t help but hope’
What followed was one of France’s most intense search operations in recent memory. Helicopters, drones, police dogs, and hundreds of volunteers scoured the mountainous terrain, but despite their exhaustive efforts, no trace of the child was found.

The village, with its tight-knit community of just 25 residents, became the center of a national mystery.

As days turned into months, hope started to fade but his parents – Colomban and Marie – were praying for a miracle.

“We inevitably imagine the worst, but we can’t help but hope,” Colomban told Famille Chrétienne about his son’s disappearance. “We’re not afraid to ask God for a miracle,” added Marie.

For nine long months, Émile’s fate remained a mystery – until March 2024, when a local hiker made a grim discovery.

Skull and teeth
Broadcasting group France Bleu reports that on March 30, 2024, a child’s skull and several teeth were found about 2K from the village, deep in a rugged, forested area.

The discovery sent shockwaves through France. DNA tests quickly confirmed that the remains belonged to Émile, but how they got there, and what had happened to him, remained unknown.

Forensic experts were unable to determine a clear cause of death, leaving investigators with more questions than answers.

“It’s hard to imagine, even if the body was buried deep enough, that they missed it,” said an investigator, who was referring to the intensive search efforts. “Especially since they passed by several times, several days after the body disappeared.”

At the time of discovery, the investigator offered another theory: “If we only have the skull or very small elements, we can imagine that it was moved by a murderer or by bad weather or by animals.”

‘Voluntary homicide’
In a shocking new development, authorities announced that Émile’s grandparents, Philippe Vedovini and his wife Anne, both 59, and two other family members were arrested for “voluntary homicide” and “concealing a corpse,” according to France Bleu.

The child’s uncle and aunt – the Vedovini’s children – were also taken into custody

On “March 25, 2025, Philippe Vedovini and his wife, grandparents of Émile Soleil, as well as two of their adult children, were taken into custody on charges of voluntary homicide and concealment of a corpse by investigators,” Marseille gendarmerie wrote in statement, released by local media.

This shocking development has turned the case on its head and villagers are grappling with a mix of shock, disbelief, and sorrow.

“These are people I know very well ,” one anonymous resident told France 3 of the grandparents, who publicly grieved the loss of their grandson. “I don’t believe it, no, it’s impossible. Can you imagine children that age, little ones…”

The villager continued, “I have four children, I know what it’s like. For them [grandparents], they miss Émile, we miss him. Everyone misses him. My grandson was the same age…I said to myself: my God…It made me sick for Emile.”

As the investigation continues, France watches and waits, desperate for the truth. Émile’s story, once a heartbreaking mystery, is now closer to finding its final chapter.
