Man goes viral for extreme head lice infestation

A shocking video of a tricycle driver with a severe head lice infestation has been making rounds on social media, causing concern among Filipino netizens.

The now-deleted footage, posted by Facebook user Primo Onipa, aims to raise awareness about the dangers of untreated lice infestations.

Onipa also reminded fellow drivers to maintain good hygiene as they interact with numerous commuters daily.

In the video, lice can be seen crawling across the back of the driver’s neck and onto his shirt, showcasing an extreme case of infestation.

Dr. Jay Recasata of Faces and Curves explained that such cases can cause severe discomfort. “Head lice infestation is contagious. It thrives in the roots of our hair, proliferates fast, and sucks out blood in the head. When this happens, it may produce wounds on the scalp and can eventually lead to a bacterial infection,” he said, per the Filipino Times.

Dr. Recasata added that treatment is simple, requiring only a special shampoo that costs around P500 per bottle. However, untreated lice infestations can escalate, and Dr. Enrique Collantes from Derma Clinic warned that severe cases might lead to anemia and malnutrition due to the lice feeding on the host’s blood.

According to the National Health Service, head lice spread through direct contact with an infected person or by sharing personal items like combs, brushes, and hats. Lice can also live on upholstered furniture, bedding, and towels for a short period, further spreading the infestation.

To avoid lice, it’s recommended to wash clothes and bedding in hot water, vacuum floors, and soak hair brushes in hot water for five to ten minutes. These preventive measures can help ensure a lice-free environment.

Keeping hygiene in check is crucial, especially for those in contact with many people daily, like drivers and commuters.
